Niger State government has begun a clampdown on illegal mining sites in the state as part of measures to safeguard communities from harmful effects of illegal mining.
The Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Alhaji Garba Sabo Yahaya said the clampdown followed series of complaints from communities about the harmful effects of illegal mining on their health and means of livelihood.
Among the sites visited was the popular mining sites in Mai Wayo, Kateregi and Gadaeregi along Minna- Bida Road.
Communities lamented that the mining activities were causing serious environmental hazards and posing health risks to them.

State government officials observed that there was need to embark on responsible mining practices to protect both the environment and the health of the people.
Speaking, Mr Adeife Oluwatosin, Project Manager of Ries Templar Integrated service at the site visited agreed to suspend operations and cooperate with the authorities.
They expressed their willingness to comply with the regulations and work towards improving their practices for the benefit of the state.
