Niger assembly orders suspension of 15 LG chairmen over contract racketeering

The Niger State House of Assembly on Wednesday ordered the suspension of 15 out of the 25 local government council chairmen of the state over alleged contract racketeering.

The order came after the chairman of the ad hoc committee investigating contract financing loans of 25 LGAs, Malik Madaki Bosso, presented the interim report on the floor of the house.

Bosso said the suspension was necessary to enable the parliament to conclude its investigation without interference.

According to him, the recommendation for the suspension was in line with the constitution as well as the provisions of Section 90 sub-section one A, B and C of the Local Government Law 2001 as amended.

The House resolved that the local government chairmen of Mokwa, Gbako, Suleija, Gurara, Tafa, Paikoro, Bosso, Agwara, Borgu, Kontagora, Wushishi, Magama, Mariga, Mashegu and Rijau be suspended to pave the way for a smooth investigation.

The House also resolved that the sum of N24 million deducted from each of the contract sums of the 25 LGAs, amounting to N600 million be refunded.
