NHIS boss links poverty to lack of healthcare

The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Prof. Sambo Muhammed, says lack of healthcare provision for people is causing poverty.

According to him, that is why the NHIS is calling on everybody to subscribe to health insurance coverage for all so that there can be enough funds in the pool to cater for every enrolee.

Sambo spoke in Abuja on Thursday when he paid a courtesy visit to the corporate head office of Media Trust Limited, publishers of Daily Trust titles.

“If you have a very large pool, it helps other people to enjoy health care irrespective of their contributions. It is all about risk-taking. It is about risk pooling in one basket which is 10 percent contributions gathered in a pool to help people solve their help needs.

“The current contributions are from people from the formal sector and if there is no pool, there will be no health coverage,” he stated.

Sambo said a cardinal focus of the NHIS was to build a robust ICT for the scheme to make it transparent in its dealings with the public.

He sought collaboration with Media Trust Limited, saying the scheme’s doors were opened for any information needed to help the public and the scheme.

The Chief Executive Officer of Media Trust Limited, Malam Mannir Dan-Ali, assured of the company’s readiness to collaborate with the NHIS.

He said: “We’re passionate about the scheme and also about the populace getting it right and we believe in going forward. Ours is to get public confidence.”
