A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), GreenLight Initiative, has called on the federal government to prioritize walking and cycling to promote sustainable transportation system in the country.

Simon Patrick Obi, Executive Director of the group, made the call Monday in Abuja while speaking during a courtesy visit to Imrana Lamba Ibrahim, Assistant Corps Commander of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).

The visit was in commemoration of the 7th United Nations Global Road Safety Week scheduled to take place from May 15 to May 21, 2023.

This year’s road safety week is themed ‘Sustainable transport, and specifically the need for governments to facilitate a shift to walking, cycling, and using public transport.’

Obi said: “The benefits of sustainable transport are clear. Walking and cycling not only promote physical activity and reduce the risk of chronic diseases, but they also reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, leading to improved public health and a cleaner environment. Additionally, investing in public transport can improve access to essential services and promote economic growth.

“We call on governments to take action to promote sustainable transport. This includes investing in infrastructure such as dedicated cycling and walking lanes, promoting the use of public transport through improved services and subsidies, and encouraging walking and cycling through education and awareness campaigns. By doing so, we can improve road safety, protect our environment, and create a more sustainable future for all.”

Also speaking, the Assistant Corps Commander of FRSC appreciated the team and promised further partnership.

“This beautiful plaque given to me is a password and the key to achieving more. This is an encouraging, this is the motivation because with this award of excellence I don’t think I have any reason, If I cannot maintain the tempo then I cannot go back,” he said.
