Director-General, National Copyrights Commission, John Asein, says the enactment of the Nigeria Copyright Act in 2022 has strengthened enforcement against piracy.

He spoke Tuesday in Abuja at the Nigerian Copyright Commission’s 2023 Prize Giving Ceremony and National Creative Writing Competition for Secondary Schools.

He said the Act had empowered, upgraded and rebooted the commission to address copyright infringement.

“I think we have a better deal now where the punishment made it N100 fine per copy, you now have N10,000 fine per copy.

“The Act provides for maximum punishment now in the minimum punishment; where it says five years, that is the minimum. That’ll give us a huge lift.”
