In 2022, Borno State governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the popular West-End Roundabout, in Maiduguri Metropolis. The roundabout links Baga Road, Custom, Post Office area and Kashim Ibrahim Way. The reconstruction is no doubt part of the development agenda of giving Borno a facelift.
The roundabout has a long history. In the first place, the roundabout has the fish symbol. However, the fish, alongside other symbols, like the horse at the popular cross Mai-doki were removed during the reign of late Governor Mala Kachalla, due to the introduction of Sharia law in 2002.
The placement of fish at the West-End Roundabout is an indication of the route of Baga town, Kukawa Local Government Area. Baga is a renowned centre for fishing because of Lake Chad.

The removal of the fish in the early 20th century made the roundabout remain as it was until the intervention by Governor Zulum.
The roundabout has been redesigned. It has a canoe and other fishing equipment. This singular project has given the people of northern Borno a sense of belonging. Thank you for bringing back our identity. Posterity will always remember this giant stride.
