NEDC donates medical equipment to 3 health institutions in Borno

North East Development Commission (NEDC) has donated medical equipment worth hundreds of millions of naira to health institutions in the war-ravaged Borno to provide succour to the victims of insurgency.

NEDC also donated N480 million to the University of Maiduguri to support cancer research projects.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Dr Nasir Sani Gwarzo stated this during the official handing over of the equipment to the 7 Division of Nigeria Army Referral Hospital in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

Gwarzo maintained that despite the current challenges facing the country, the troops deserved support for their sacrifice and gallantry, saying NEDC would continue to support the military in restoring peace in the region.

He explained that the commission donated hospitals/medical equipment to three health institutions and the University of Maiduguri including an Analogue X-ray machine with digitizer and others to 7 Division of Nigeria Army Hospital,  hospital equipment, and 500KVA to the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Maiduguri; 200 units of hospital beds and accessories to University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

“I will like to hand over this very important equipment to you, we believe with these more lives will be saved. The equipment includes an Analogue X-ray machine with a digitiser, a neutral sound machine with 3 probes and a 500K generator set and large quantities of medical consumables. This is a laudable project. We are proud of NEDC for this beautiful project that would positively enhance the health care services,” Gwarzo said.

In his remarks, Managing Director of NEDC, Mohammed Alkali said the commission would support the people of the region with projects that would bring lasting peace to the people.

Responding, General Officer Commanding 7 Division of Nigeria Army, Maj Gen W Shaibu thanked the NEDC and her team for support to the troops and their families. He assured that all equipment would be put into intended use for the benefit of Operation Hadin Kai.

“I want sincerely appreciate the NEDC for this kind gesture and I use this medium to express our heartfelt appreciation to the leadership for this show of love and concern for the Nigerian military and her personnel,” Shaibu said.

On his part, the Medical Director of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri Dr. Ibrahim Abdu Wakawa thanked the commission and described the gesture as a lifesaving intervention not for the hospital but for the entire Northeast sub-region.
