The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) is arranging to export 70 megawatts (MW) to the Republic of Togo and another 100MW to Paradise City in Calabar from the 560MW Odukpani power plant in Cross River state.

The Executive Director, Generation at NDPHC, Engr. Kassim Abdullahi who inspected the plant near Calabar, last weekend said: “Calabar is one of the plants where we have bilateral agreement with Togo, with a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply about 70MW and also there are on-going discussions with other potential customers in Calabar like the Paradise City, where they are willing to off-take 100MW.”

The plant which is one of the 10 Generation Companies (GenCos) under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP) has five gas turbines with a 560MW capacity, said, a statement by the spokesperson, Mrs Olufunke Nwankwo.

Speaking shortly after the inspection, Engr. Abdullahi, said the plant has uninterruptible gas availability and a good electricity dispatch network.

“Calabar is doing very well. We have gas, we have a good network for dispatch. It is one of the best”.

He also noted that the plant serves some eligible customers who connect directly to the plant outside the Distribution Companies (DisCos).

Abdullahi however said some other NIPP plants of NDPHC have challenges. “Most of the power stations that we have in NDPHC today are limited in their operations because of the dispatch challenges. We are hardly doing the full capacity because of grid constraints but with the eligible customers framework we are able to commence some serious drive and engagements with willing buyers of our power.”
