The event took place at the palace of the Emir of Fika, Alhaji Muhammadu Abali Ibn Muhammadu Idrissa, who, through his representative, called for proactive measures by relevant authorities to curtail the increasing number of drug addicts, which, according to him, could be achieved through job creation.

The area commander in charge of Potiskum, Mr. Aigbefo Daniel, lamented the high rate of drug addiction among youths and pointed out that parents, teachers and the law enforcement agencies must contribute to salvage the ugly trend.

He expressed the need for the establishment of rehabilitation centres to rehabilitate and train ex-convicts and addicts.

His outcry came in the wake of a Friday sermon by the Chief Imam of Damaturu Central Mosque, Ustaz Hudu Mohammad, who cited a recent study, which rated Yobe as the highest in terms of consumption of drugs and other intoxicants. “Subhanallah,” meaning may God forbid, the Imam said. “This is a state where the Sharia is said to be in full force…Government, parents and security agencies must do everything possible to reverse the trend,” the Imam added.
