The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Zamfara State has intercepted a Gusau-bound truck conveying assorted dangerous drugs, the state Commander of the agency, Gabriel Adamu Eigege, has said.
The truck was intercepted by the Tsafe Area Command of NDLEA based on intelligence. The truck took off from Onitsha, Anambra State.
Eigege said, “The interception of the drugs is the biggest ever yet by the NDLEA in the state. The drugs worth N100m include 185kg of cannabis sativa, 11.5kg of Hypnox, 14kg of Diazepam, 22.7kg of Valinex-5, 310kg of Exol, and 59.844kg of Codeine syrup.”
He said two persons were arrested in connection with the seizure and that they were being detained pending the outcome of the investigation.
He warned the “merchants of death’’ who were bent on destroying the youths to keep distance from Zamfara.
He added that, “If this consignment had escaped into Zamfara State, it would have disturbed the peace of the state. The youths, who the consignment is meant for would have been destroyed and its negative impact would be felt everywhere in the state.”
He then urged the people to provide useful information that would assist the NDLEA in stemming the tide of illicit drug trade and its abuse in the state.
In his reaction to the development, the Emir of Tsafe, Alhaji Muhammadu Bawa, said he was shocked when the officials of the agency drew his attention to the seizure of the drugs, adding that it would have been catastrophic if the dealers had successfully scaled through with their consignment.
He, therefore, called on the state government to provide logistic support to the agency to assist it to stop haulage and abuse of drugs in the state.
