The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it arrested 179 suspects between July and October, 2019 in Wuse Zone 4 in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The Chairman/Chief Executive of the agency, retired Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah, said this on Thursday in Abuja, while receiving the leadership of the Wuse Zone 4 Traders Association in his office.

He said the agency partnered with other law enforcement agencies and launched ‘Operation Shara’ where a special squad was deployed and went into aggressive intelligence gathering, round-the-clock patrols and sting operations.

“This special operation which lasted three months and was carried out in two phases led to the arrest of key drug merchants with seizure of sizeable quantity of drugs.

“Under the Phase 148 suspects were arrested and 496kg of cannabis seized. Also recovered were 63 cartons containing 5,161 bottles of cough syrup with Codeine, 8.2 grams of cocaine, Rhaphynol, Roche, Tramadol, Diazepam and Exol 5.

“The second phase of the operation led to the arrest of 131 suspects and seizure of 74.700kg of various substances including cannabis sativa and prescription drugs such as cough syrup with Codeine, Rhaphynol, Exol, Tramadol, Pentazocine,” Abdallah said.
