The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has begun a five-day training for 50 unemployed youths and women in Kano on agricultural extension.

Speaking at the inauguration on Monday, in Kano, NDE state Coordinator, Malam Idris Sani Yakasai, said the objective of the training was to generate employment opportunities for the youths.

He added it will also help “To improve farming methods, remove the drudgery associated with traditional farming practices and increase food production in the state and the federation.”

The coordinator said the training also aimed at reducing rural-urban migration of the youths.

He added that NDE is intending to give them some loans to purchase machines, which will enable them to go deep into the rural areas.

Yakasai said that the trainees also will be considered as self-employed as they can be charging the farmers some token for the services.

“Apart from that they can also employ others as most of the NDE programmes have multiple effects if one is trained on a skill he can also train other people, by so doing so many youths would be employed in the society”.

Saifullahi Sulaiman, a participant, thanked the federal government for initiating such training and pledged to put what they have learned into practice at the end of the course.

He, however, called on the federal government to increase the number of participants in the next training and urged the state government to do the same, so as to create more employment opportunities.

Abdul-Rasheed Mohammed, another participant, also appreciated the gesture, saying, “The training is timely for me to be self-reliant and a potential employer of labour.”
