Speaking when members of the Vision 2020 Committee on sports development in Nigeria paid him a courtesy call Thursday in Abuja, the minister said there is every need to re-build the foundation of sports in the country because if the current trend of things continue unabated, Nigeria will not catch up with the rest of the world in sports.

He maintained that the reason for setting up the committee is to ensure that Nigeria is among the 20 best sporting nations in the year 2020 just as he emphasised that football alone will not achieve that goal for the country because it is a one medal event.

“Sports in Nigeria is on a shaky ground and you cannot build skyscrapers on a foundation that is not firm.  Today, I want to say that you are all added value to the quest of re-engineering sports in this country.”

Ndanusa lamented that while countries like Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica are rated higher than Nigeria due to their gold medal winning feats at the Olympics, the country has not been able to win any medal in most recent Olympics games.

The minister said such development calls to question Nigeria’s claim to the position of African giant in sports.

While calling on the committee members to give the assignment their best shot, the minister emphasised that every facet of Nigerian sports need re-engineering and members of the vision 2020 committee are best suited for the challenge.

Responding on behalf of his members, the Chairman of the Committee, former administrator of Katsina State and former Chairman of the then NFA, Col. Abdulmumuni Aminu (rtd)  promised that his committee is working seriously hard to come up with a credible document that would stand the test of time.

He said that that the document which may contain six chapters would look at sports in the past, at the moment and in the future so that useful recommendations could be made on the way forward for Nigerian sports.
