The Executive Vice Chairman of ND Western, Dr. Layi Fatona, has been honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional and innovative leadership in the energy sector.
The award took place at the 7th Edition of the Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES).
With over forty years of expertise in the petroleum industry as a Petroleum Geologist, Dr. Layi Fatona holds a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Ibadan and Master of Science and Doctorate degrees in Petroleum Geology and Sedimentology from the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine, University of London.
As the pioneer Managing Director of the Niger Delta Petroleum Resources, he has played a pivotal role in pioneering various initiatives, including the development of marginal oil fields, gas monetization, and the establishment of the first-ever gas scrubbing plant and obtaining a license to operate a refinery at the Ogbele marginal field in Rivers State. Under his leadership, the first-ever, and one of the few, producing marginal oil fields in the country was successfully brought to production in 2005.

As a distinguished member of various professional bodies, he has received numerous awards and recognitions for his outstanding work in Petroleum Engineering and Geology. Notably, Dr. Layi Fatona has served as a past President and Fellow of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) and is recognized as a Certified Petroleum Geologist by the American Association of Petroleum Geologist (AAPG).
“He has been honored with prestigious awards such as the ‘Aret Adams Award’ from NAPE and the NMGS/DPR/Chief M.O. Feyide Award from the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS).
These accolades highlight Dr. Fatona’s dedication and expertise in the energy industry, solidifying his legacy as a leader in his field.”
