The Comptroller General of Nigeria Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, said the service had paid N198,299,150 as death claims to 144 beneficiaries under Correctional Welfare Insurance Scheme (CWIS) in 12 months.

The CG disclosed this while presenting cheques to the next of kin of six officers that lost their lives in active service at the 15th annual workshop of the NCoS in Abuja on Wednesday.

Nababa also revealed that in an effort to provide more support, a total of N299,323 million had been paid as retirement and medical claims to 548 staff.

He said the workshop with a theme, “Welfare Insurance scheme and opportunities for sustainable livelihood for NCoS staff,” was well chosen and quite apt especially at this period of economic meltdown.

One of the next of kins, Christina Obinato, said her mother was irreplaceable but the succour brought to them would help the family.

The secretary of the scheme, Sabo Aliyu, said the insurance scheme was established to provide intervention to contributing staff considering that contributory pension takes time to process.
