The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has mandated telecom companies to ensure subscribers have access to content that will preserve and positively shape Nigerian culture.

According to a statement signed by the Media Assistant to the Executive Secretary of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation, Caleb Nor, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, made the announcement in Abuja when the Executive Secretary/CEO of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, visited him.

Maida noted that it was important for critical stakeholders to put in efforts and re-orient Nigerians towards their cultural values.

He expressed the risk of foreign content shaping Nigerian culture if domestic content production does not increase.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary/CEO of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, proposed for telecommunication operators in Nigeria to include cultural content on caller tunes, as well as through shortcodes and robocalls for cultural information.

He revealed NICO’s plans to launch a Global Cultural Digital Platform called “DuduPlugs” to showcase Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage and help keep Nigerian culture vibrant in the face of Westernisation.
