The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has commenced a four-day training for 200 craftsmen on formal apprenticeship in order to transform the system from an informal to a formal structure.
The training was organised by NBTE under the Innovation Development and Effectiveness in Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) project in partnership with the World Bank.
NBTE’s Project Manager, Engineer Abbati Muhammad, who disclosed this yesterday in Gombe State during the flagg-off of the training for the 200 carpenters, welders and mechanics from the 11 LGAs of the state, said, “The beneficiaries are already into various trades; we want to equip them with basic generic skills that are necessary which will make them transform their attitudes, as well as succeed in their various places of work.”
The National Project Coordinator for IDEAS, Mrs Blessing Ogwu, said the World Bank-assisted project was initiated by the federal government and domiciled in the Federal Ministry of Education.

She said the project was focusing on skills acquisition at all levels with the aim of reducing unemployment “because it is believed that if youths are skilled, they will be gainfully employed.”
The Executive Secretary of NBTE, Professor Idris Bugaje, said the training was to help the participants upgrade their skills to meet global best practices.
