NBS to implement MPI in poverty reduction

As part of efforts to improve budgeting processes and curb multidimensional poverty in the country, the National Bureau of Statistics in partnership with stakeholders across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), has concluded plans to operationalize the National Multidimensional Poverty Index (NMPI).

The stakeholders who made the call at a technical meeting on Thursday in Abuja, emphasized the need for policy makers to have access to valuable information on how to tackle poverty through data deployment.

Speaking at the event, Statistician-General of the Federation, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran said, “The primary objective of the survey was to establish a robust poverty database to inform evidence-based policies and programmes for short, medium, and long-term interventions. Furthermore, it was also aimed at providing a veritable tool to support budgeting and resource allocation across the different tiers of government in the federation.”

He added, “For the NBS, and by extension the National Statistical System (NSS), operationalising the MPI is certainly a welcome development and one that is well overdue. This means going beyond making the necessary data and evidence available, to designing targeted programmes and policies to address the issues identified within the data.”

Also speaking, the Minister of budget and economic planning, Sen. Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, said “the MPI program aims to reduce poverty through economic growth and consistent implementation of the national social protection.”
