The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has fined 88 radio and television stations across the country the sum of N11.775million for various breaches in contravention of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
The NBC Director General had recently told Daily Trust in an interview that the commission was compiling the list of erring stations to be sanctioned for unwholesome broadcasting.
But on Monday, the broadcasting industry regulatory agency released the list of stations that have been sanctioned for various breaches, including playing music with vulgar lyrics, broadcasting political campaign before stipulated time, hate speeches and showing of unverifiable miracle claims, among others.
The sanctioned stations cut across almost all the six zones of the country, according to NBC’s head of public affairs, Mrs Maimuna Jimada, in a statement Monday.
Some of the stations who got the fine include: Cool FM, AIT, NTA, Hot FM, WE FM, ITV, Rhythm FM, FRCN, OGTV, Kennis Music FM, Liberty FM/TV, DITV/Alheri FM and Nigeria Info, among others.
“The Commission wishes to re-iterate to all broadcasters that they have a duty to promote the socio-economic well-being of the Nigerian state and abide strictly by the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code”, she said.
