The National Assembly has called on stakeholders in the telecommunications sector in the country particularly the network operators, to guard against the radiation and health hazards emanating from the telecoms infrastructure exposures.
Chairman of the House Committee on Communications at the National Assembly, Hon. Saheed Fijabi made the call at an awareness and sensitization workshop on Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Exposure and Health for South West and North Central Regions in Ibadan.
While acknowledging the laudable strides attained by the communications sector over the last 10 years, he said these achievements can only be sustained and improved upon if all the stakeholders, “work together to protect our environment and sensitize Nigerians on how they can maximize our safety and health from deterioration as a result of EMF and radiation hazards.”
Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Professor Umar Garba Danbatta who was represented by the Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, Engr. Ubale Maska said that in recent times, the commission had noticed a steady increase in public concerns regarding the possible health effect of EMF radiation emanating from telecommunications equipment/infrastructure.
