NASS leadership: Need for balanced equation

The emergence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential election is a welcome development because of the re-election of APC as the ruling party which will ensure continuity.

The difference is clear from the utterances and pronouncements of the new president, since his inauguration.

The speedy decision on the removal of oil subsidy, the tackling of the CBN and the appointment of personal staff as well as the appointment of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has alluded to an active and energetic presidency. The president’s performance so far is promising and commendable.

However, one area that the new president and the ruling APC need to be tactical is in the election of the leadership of the National Assembly. The need for balancing the geopolitical zone representation at the National Assembly level is very important.

Zones that contribute immensely to the success of the ruling party need to be properly rewarded.

The composition of the National Assembly leadership without the North Central zone is going to be a serious miscalculation on the part of the president and the party. There is need for a tested and trusted senator in that position.

This is where Senator Muhammad Sani Musa (Niger East) comes in, as the most suitable person to lead the Senate.

The senator is well qualified to hold any position in the Senate as well as represent the North Central zone, to balance the composition of the chamber.

The president should use his political skill and dexterity to balance the equation, by making sure no zone is left out in the sharing of positions in the National Assembly.

The North Central zone has given APC so much that it equally deserves much from both the president and the party.
