The grand finale of the weeklong event taking place across the over 350 branches of NASFAT in Nigeria and abroad comes up on Sunday.

Women Affairs Secretary of NASFAT, Mrs Suweebah Kupolati, who spoke in Lagos at a media briefing, lamented the plights of women in Nigeria, saying women have paid “a heavy price in the conflicts that have been ravaging the country.”

She said women in Nigeria had in the past two decades endured “unprecedented levels of sexual violence, along with related HIV infection, involuntary pregnancies and health complications, increased food insecurity and internal displacement.”

Kupolati added that women should play a significant role in ensuring peace in their communities and countries around the world.

“First and perhaps most importantly, if women are not involved in the peace process, peace is unlikely to be sustainable,” she said.

She called on the government to pay greater attention to girl-child education, employment opportunities for women, greater involvement of women in governance, and protection of women against domestic and sexual violence.
