NANS, Niger Delta youths demand autopsy report on slain Oyo varsity student

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the Niger Delta Youth Leaders Front have called for the release of the autopsy report concerning the death of Jeffery Chamuke Akron, a Mechanical Engineering student at the Ajayi Crowther University in Oyo State.

Akron was allegedly beaten to death by fellow students following accusations of phone theft.

The 25 students implicated in his murder, aged between 18 and 34, were recently brought before the Chief Magistrate Court in Oyo State and will remain in custody until their trial begins on July 8.

Akron, who resided in the Shepherd Inn hostel on campus, was reportedly assaulted from 6pm on Friday until around 10am on Saturday.

NANS and the Niger Delta Youth staged a protest at the university, demanding transparency regarding the autopsy report.

Comrade Lucky Emonefe, President of NANS, and Honourable Chukwutem Nwogor, President of the Niger Delta Youth Leaders Front, expressed their concerns to newsmen after visiting the university.

They questioned the identities of the suspects and alleged plot to shield the real killers.

The groups jointly requested the disclosure of the actual identities of those involved in Akron’s death, the release of the autopsy report, and a meeting between the university’s management and Akron’s family.

Also, Nwogor criticised the living conditions in the university’s hostels and called out the Minister of Education for what he perceived as indifference to the situation.

Nwogor emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety in educational institutions and criticized the lack of proper facilities in Ajayi Crowther University’s hostels, stressing that monetary concerns should not overshadow students’ safety.
