He said, “The decline in sporting activities, especially in primary and secondary schools, has had a ripple effect, leading to a lack of interest and participation at the tertiary level. It is crucial that the government takes proactive measures to address this issue by implementing policies that encourage and prioritize sports from the grassroots level through tertiary institutions.

“Sports contribute not only to physical health but also to mental and emotional well-being, fostering a holistic development approach.

“The government should mandate primary and secondary schools to integrate comprehensive sporting activities into their curriculum also government should Enact policies that make sports an integral part of tertiary education. Universities, polytechnics, and colleges should be mandated to allocate resources and create an ecosystem that promotes a thriving sports culture.

“Also they should establish a framework for talent identification at the grassroots level. Schools should actively participate in identifying and nurturing young talents, providing them with opportunities to excel in various sports.”

The students’ association also called on the government to mandate heads of tertiary institutions, including Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts, with the responsibility of championing sports within their campuses.
