Naija Super 8: Lobi Stars humble Akwa Utd as Rivers Utd exit with pride

Lobi Stars yesterday secured a semi-final berth following a comprehensive 2-0 win over Akwa United in the Naija Super 8 Group B clash at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos.

Akwa United who had equally qualified for the semi-finals started the game brightly but Lobi Stars opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Joseph Atule.

The striker put the Pride of Benue in front after connecting expertly to a sublime cross from Waheed Adebayo’s cross to head in the first goal.

Eight minutes later, Atule got on the score sheet as he capitaliSed on the mix up in the Akwa United backline to make it 2-0.

Akwa United rang some changes in the second half to get back into the game but Lobi stood firm to fly away with all three points to finish top of the group with 7 points.

In the earlier game played, Rivers United ended their campaign with a slim 1-0 win over Yobe Desert Stars.

Both sides prior to this game were already eliminated but played for pride.

Kazie Enyinnaya’s 25th minute strike was the difference as Stanley Eguma’s men took to Rivers while Yobe Stars returned to the desert with just a point from three games.

Stand-in coach, Ndubuisi Nduka while speaking to the press said the team has learnt from the tournament especially with the new players coming on board.

Meanwhile, the last game in Group A is between Katsina United and Sporting Lagos today.
