NAFDAC cracks down on kuskura, illegal herbal aphrodisiacs

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has commenced a nationwide crackdown of all illegal manufacturers and distributors of an intoxicant called Kuskura, herbal aphrodisiacs, alcoholic bitters and other preparations.

The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, made the disclosure yesterday while briefing newsmen in Abuja.

She said this is geared towards bringing perpetrators to book and minimize the usage of the substances.

The move by NAFDAC is coming on the heels of a recent report by Daily Trust Saturday on the high rise in the usage of kuskura in Kaduna State.

The NAFDAC boss said findings from various operations carried out revealed a dangerous trend in the use of such substances laced with high concentration of tobacco and sometimes cannabis by the populace cutting across gender and age groups, particularly artisans and okada riders, among other.

Prof. Adeyeye said recently, the agency received series of report on the use of a herbal preparation popularly known as ‘kuskura’ particularly in the South West and Northern axis of the country.
