The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has urged the federal government to make petroleum products available and affordable as the lingering scarcity of the products is compounding the hardship being experienced by the masses.
This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of its 28th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held recently in Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.
The meeting was presided over by the NAAT president, Comrade Sani Suleiman, and deliberated on crucial issues affecting NAAT and the state of the nation.
NAAT in the communiqué described as worrisome and unacceptable what it called ‘unilateral increase in electricity tariff’ by electricity distribution companies and dwindling electricity generation especially against the background of a subsisting court order. It urged the federal government to intensify efforts in increasing power generation and distribution.
NAAT also implored the federal government to urgently focus on the rehabilitation of the railways and federal roads for easy transportation of goods and services and to curb road carnage.
The union urged the Buhari-led administration to extend the fight against corruption to all public institutions, saying as a stakeholder in the system, the union knew that there were issues of corruption that need to be addressed.
On the 2009 FGN/NAAT agreement, the union implored both the federal and state governments to fully implement the agreement which was long overdue for renegotiation, saying it was important if the current industrial harmony on university campuses must be sustained.
On Direct Teaching and Laboratory Cost (DTLC), it advised the federal government on prompt release of funds and to ensure full utilisation of the funds for intended purposes.
