N9m up for grabs in U-19 Obasa Games in Lagos

Teeming athletes across the Lagos West Senatorial District are gearing up to compete for the cash prizes of N9 million and other gift prizes at the second edition of the Obasa Games scheduled to commence on November 15 to December 14.

The one-month competition sponsored by the Lagos State speaker, Rt. Hon Mudashiru Obasa, would feature athletes from the 11 Local Governments (LGs) and 19 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) within the district.

Explaining the change of the competition’s format from ‘Obasa Cup,’ to ‘Obasa Games’, the chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Abdulganiu Obasa, said it was to accommodate indoor sports like scrabble, chess, table tennis and boxing.

“Last year, it was only football within Agege, but this year, we’ve taken it to the Lagos West Senatorial District, bringing young athletes from across the local councils together.

“We’re expecting over 200 to 300 athletes, with top teams like Robo of Mushin and Dannaz FC of Ikeja set to participate. Alongside football, we’re excited to introduce indoor sports like boxing, table tennis, scrabble, and chess,” he said.

He stressed that the competition will provide opportunities for young athletes to showcase their skills, saying the winner of the football competition would take home N3 million, while the runners-up and third-place teams would receive N2 million and N1 million respectively.

Obasa added that the boxing and table tennis winners in both male and female categories would receive N1 Million each, while scrabble, and chess champions would get N500,000 each with additional prizes valued at N500,000 to be shared among other participants.

He hinted that the next edition would feature track and field games to unearth the fastest athletes in the Senatorial District.

Meanwhile, the football event will take place across three venues: Dairy Farms Secondary School, Awwarul Secondary School, and TTC Ifako Ijaye, while the indoor sports will be hosted at the Agege Sports Complex.
