The prosecution counsel in the corruption case levelled against the immediate-past governor of Niger state, Dr Muazu Babangida Aliyu and two others, Boniface Bassey on Tuesday announced that he was withdrawing from the case.

The two others in the case are the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 and 2019 governorship election in the state, Alhaji Umar Mohammed Nasko and the state chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Tanko Beji.

The three suspects had been facing trial over alleged diversion of ecological funds totalling over N2billion since April 2017.

Bassey announced his withdrawal when the case came up for further mentioning before Justice Mikhailu Abdullahi today.

Counsel to Nasko, Mamman Mike, SAN, in response to the verbal application asked the court to terminate the case since there is no prosecution.

However, Justice Abdullahi in his response said the court would not act on a verbal application and therefore directed the prosecution to put its application in writing.

“If the prosecution puts the application in writing today and submit it before the court, I will rule on it tomorrow (Wednesday),” he said.
