N250,000 minimum wage will plunge Nigeria into economic turmoil – CNP

Concerned Nigerian Patriots (CNP) has said implementing the N250,000 minimum wage proposed by the organised labour would plunge Nigeria into economic turmoil.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, the CNP Chairman, Alhaji Alfa Mohammed Esq also said frequent labour strike is a threat to the nation’s economy.

Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) had embarked on an indefinite strike action that grounded economic activities in the country over failure of the federal government to reach a consensus with them on minimum wage.

They later relaxed their action for one week, following the federal government’s commitment to further negotiations.

After series of negotiations with the organised labour, the federal government proposed N62, 000 as minimum wage, but labour had rejected the sum insisting on N250,000, and threatening to continue with the indefinite strike action if their demand is not met.

But Mohammed said, “The recent demands for an unrealistic minimum wage by the coalition of the NLC, TUC, and the Labour Party (LP) pose a significant risk of plunging Nigeria into another recession.

“Their insistence on a minimum wage initially set at N605,000, then N494,000, and now N250,000, is part of a broader strategy to force the government into adopting an economically unfeasible policy. Such a wage hike would likely lead to severe inflation, increased unemployment, decreased productivity, and greater economic hardship.

“We urge all Nigerians, especially our diligent workforce, to see through this veil of mischief. When a government is sabotaged, it is the masses who suffer the consequences. It is the responsibility of every citizen to support and pray for the success of our government, not to undermine it.”
