N2.5m required for hip surgery on anaemia patient – ABUTH

The Management of the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching hospital (ABUTH), Shika, Zaria, has disclosed that Fadila Yahaya, a 24-year-old lady suffering from sickle cell anaemia requires N2.5 million to undergo a total hip replacement surgery.

This was contained in a diagnosis letter from the Department of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery of ABUTH to the parents signed by the consultant orthopaedic.

According to the letter, “The patient, Fadila Yahaya, with hospital number 620763,…presented with bilateral hip pain and inability to work was evaluated and diagnosis of bilateral avascular necrosis (AVN) of the head of the femur was made.

“She has been placed for bilateral total hip replacement (THR) which will cost N2.5m for both hips.”

Fadila is currently bedridden with bulge along her spinal cord and a protruding hip bone with yellowish eyes.

Her father, Malam Lawal Yahaya, who is a civil servant, said he had exhausted all his savings in treating his daughter.

He appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to come to his daughter’s aid.
