N19bn spent on N/Assembly Complex renovation so far – FCDA

The Federal Capital Development Authority Wednesday said it had so far spent over N19bn on the renovation and remodeling of the National Assembly Complex out of the over N30bn budgeted for the project.

It said the renovation work would not be completed before the inauguration of the 10th Assembly in June.

Executive Secretary, FCDA, Shehu Hadi Ahmad, who addressed a press conference in Abuja yesterday, said the building would be ready for use by August.

The lawmakers have been using makeshift chambers since the commencement of the renovation work in April 2022.

Ahmad explained that the enormity of work required for a world class parliament building needed not to be rushed to avoid past mistakes.

He said the FCDA team had visited some of the world’s best parliamentary structures, including the 17th century parliament building in Rome and that of the European Union in Brussels, Belgium, to ensure standard.

According to him, the comfort and convenience of parliamentarians in the two chambers is of paramount importance for smooth legislative and budgetary duties.
