My deal with Rivers United is highly lucrative – Afelokahi

Former Enyimba goalkeeper, Theophilus Afelokahi has said that his contract with Rivers United is very lucrative following his move to the Port-Harcourt based club.

In a chat with the former Kano Pillars goalkeeper, he said prior to his move to the oil-rich club, he was already the highest-paid footballer in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

“I have been the highest-paid since I joined Enyimba and before any club can pull me out of Enyimba, you know what it means. It is a good deal and it is part of progress. Some people want to be like me while I also want to be like some people,” he said.

When asked if he was to be paid N100,000 per clean sheet he keeps, he said “that’s why I am telling you that it is not a bad offer.”

It will be noted that Afelokhai is now expected to pocket N1.2 million as monthly salary from his deal with Rivers United.

The 32 years old Afelokhai spent five years with the People’s Elephant after joining the Aba side from Kano Pillars in December 2015.

Afelokhai has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the NPFL during his time at Kano Pillars and at Enyimba.

He did not feature for any of the national youth teams Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets at any major tournaments.

He was a key part of the national U-23 Dream Team squad to 2011 CAF U-23 Championship as Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Afelokhai was also part of the home-based Super Eagles team to the 2018 African Nations Championship in Morocco.
