In an effort to reduce the burden of cervical cancer in the FCT, a non-governmental organisation has screened 200 women for cervical cancer, five of them positive and placed on treatment.
“A mind-blowing figure of 500,000 women affected yearly with cervical cancer prompted this campaign to sensitise women for the need to know the condition of their pelvic and their body,” Irene Awunah-Ikyegh, president of the Association of Aliwe Daughters International (AADI) said.
“The cost of treatment is high and AADI is trying to initiate a conversation so that the government will find a way to subsidise treatment or give free treatment like the HIV/AIDS are benefitting,”she said.
The women were also sensitised on the causes of cervical cancer and preventive measures during a cervical cancer campaign tagged ‘My body My right’ in Abuja.
