The National Commission for Museum and Monument (NCMM) would partner with the development Research and Project Centre (dRPC) to upgrade the History and Culture Bureau in Kano popularly known as Gidan Dan Hausa.
Deputy Director, Research Planning and Publications of NCMM, Mrs Folayemi Famoroti, disclosed this in Kano when she led the NCMM delegation to assess the museum and discuss modalities on how to execute the project with dRPC.
She said it was one of the mandates of the commission to manage, preserve and protect national heritage which include physical manifestation of heritage, the artifacts, historical sites and monuments.
“One of the mandates of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments is the protection and preservation of our cultural and natural heritage for the purpose of educating and entertaining the public.
“We are also mandated to support individuals, organizations and agencies, both in private and public sectors for the establishment of museums and upgrading of the existing museum facilities.”
“It is in line with this mandate, the NCMM has decided to work in collaboration with dRPC to upgrade the museum, library and archives of History and Culture Bureau in Kano popularly known as Gidan Dan Hausa, to an appreciable standard.
“We are therefore in Kano to assess the facilities on ground in order to determine areas of intervention,” she said.
She added that the team had gone round to different museums and libraries, and was ready to support them.
“We have seen the Alhaji Alhassan Dantata archives at the Murtala Muhammad library and we are determined to render our technical support in upgrading it to international standard,” she disclosed.
Also speaking, the Chief Curator of the National Museum Abuja, Ezinwanyi Nwachukwu, said there was need to improve the capacity of the staff of the museums so as to be able to discharge their duties effectively.
