Murder of teacher: Taraba govt puts security measures in schools

There will be compulsory check of students in all secondary schools in Taraba State, following the stabbing to death of a secondary school teacher in Jalingo.

Similarly, principals of all secondary schools have been directed to collect telephone numbers of security agents in case of security threats in their schools.

The state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Augustine Godwin disclosed this during a press briefing over the stabbing to death of Mr. Bassey Sardauna Nkuphee a teacher at Model School, Jalingo, allegedly by a former student of the school.

She said the measure was to ensure safety of both students and teachers adding that there were reports of some students coming to schools with weapons.

The commissioner stated that the principal suspect in the murder of the teacher was arrested by the police.

She explained that during a meeting between the Academic  Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) and officials of the ministry, it was resolved that the welfare of family of the deceased teacher would be addressed by the government while a thorough investigation would be conducted to bring to book all those involved.

Dr. Godwin said officials of the ministry led by Idris Goje, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, visited family of the deceased teacher and condoled them

She said during the meeting between officials of the union of secondary schools teachers, the union agreed to suspend its planned closure of all government secondary schools and directed all principals to open schools on Monday.

She said the ministry will soon embark on school perimeter fencing as part of security measures to stop hoodlums from entering schools to cause security breach.

The commissioner also revealed that a final year student of the state university, Jalingo was stabbed by a non-student at the premises of Friday Mosque in the university.

She said the student was rushed to hospital and is responding to treatment while the attacker was arrested by the university security and handed over to the police.
