As part of effort to give back to the society, MTN Foundation has provided healthcare services to both buyers and sellers in three markets in Rivers state.
In a statement on Monday by the foundation, it said medical services were provided for buyers and sellers in New Layout Market, Borokiri and Rumuwoji Market (Mile 1 Ultra-Modern Market) in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
It added that MTN Market Doctor is part of MTN Foundation’s health initiatives aimed at improving access to healthcare in Nigeria, especially the underserved population.
The MTN Market Doctor programme was structured into various departments including nursing station, doctor’s station, and a pharmacy which provided free blood pressure checkups and necessary drugs to all beneficiaries, it noted.
According to the statement, buyers and sellers at the markets suspended their primary assignments and trooped to the designated points to consult the doctors for medical examination and other medical services.
One of the beneficiaries, Ibiene Justina Akalugbo, said: “I am really happy for what is happening today at New Layout Market. MTN came to the market to give us free medical treatment and the traders in New Layout Market are very happy because some people don’t even have money to go to clinic talk less of the health centres but today, MTN has brought medical services to us here.
“So I am standing on behalf of the traders in New Layout to tell MTN thank you.”
“With a plan to reach many communities in Nigeria, MTN Market Doctor will also be visiting Oyigbo main market, Echi Eta market in Eleme, Ndoni main market next, providing medical care to the individuals in the market,” the statement said.
