Motorists and travellers in Adamawa State have criticised the federal government over poor handling of Numan-Gombe road project awarded since 2017.
The contract for rehabilitation of the road awarded to China Construction Company has stalled, with the Chinese company completing only few kilometers in four years, leaving much of the road in worse form.
Gully potholes have taken over the road, causing frequent accidents sometimes involving loss of life as vehicles plunge in to the ditches or break down along the high way.
A motorist, Dankano Ahmad who plies the road regularly lamented the deplorable condition of the road, saying the road had been the nightmare of travellers in the last 20 years.
“When Atiku Abubakar became the vice president we said ‘hurray’, thinking that the road would be fixed but that did not happen and we were disappointed. Then President Muhammadu Buhari came to power and awarded the contract in 2017. That raised our hope, unfortunately the construction company has failed to make any progress in four years.”
A commercial driver, Shehu Bello, said, “I am appealing to federal government appointees from Adamawa and those close to President Buhari to follow up with the relevant authorities. People like the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, the SGF, Boss Mustapha, the FCT minister, Mohammed Musa Bello and others should come to our aid.”
