Authorities in Oyigbo local government area of Rivers have directed that motorcycles cannot operate beyond 7pm and tricycles beyond 8pm from Tuesday after an attack in which two people are feared dead.
It came after suspected members of Indigenous People of Biafra on Saturday and Sunday attacked a location where northerners reside.
Chairman of Oyigbo council area, Gerald Oforji, condemned the attack, while speaking on radio in Port Harcourt and appealed for calm.
Spokesman of Northern community in Rivers state, Musa Saidu, said the problem started with the suspected IPOB members attacked a base in Oyigbo that has a high concentration of Hausa indigenes.
” I don’t know the motives behind this attack but I am not unaware of the fact that IPOB members have been threatening to attack our people,” he said.
Police is yet to confirm the incident; messages sent to the Rivers command spokesman SP Nnamdi Omoni went unanswered, as at the time of this report.
But a source from Rivers state Police Command said the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan has directed the deployment of police tactical command to restore normalcy in the affected area.
