Motorcyclist remanded for attacking POS operator

The Osun State Magistrate Court in Osogbo, on Tuesday, remanded a commercial motorcycle operators, Tope Olomola, for attacking an agent operating a POS.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Olayiwola Rasaq, told the court that the accused person attempted to rob the money agent, Bolanle Rainat, of the cash she was using for transaction.

He said the 20-year-old motorcyclist hit the POS attendant on her head with a hammer when he robbed her at Agbajowo Community, Akede Area, Oke Baale, Osogbo, on December 28, 2020, at about 2pm.

The prosecutor told the court that the accused person inflicted injury on his victim, saying that she sustained an open injury on her head.

The victim explained that she was selling soft drinks together with the POS business.

She said “He parked his motorcycle in front of my shop and entered to buy a bottle of coke and  asked for permission to sit and drink the coke in the shop which I granted him.

“The next thing, he went outside to bring a sledgehammer and hit my head.

“When he saw people coming, he rushed out and ran away. People in the area chased and caught him.”

The prosecutor said the offence committed by the accused person was contrary to Section 403(1)(2)(b) and 355 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol ll Law of Osun State 2002.

When the charges were read to him, the accused person admitted to the two-count charges of attempted robbery and assault preferred against him by the police.

The magistrate, Abayomi Ajala, said the punishment for the offence committed by the accused was three years imprisonment and life imprisonment respectively.

He ordered the prosecutor to transfer the case file to Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

The magistrate remanded the accused person at the correctional centre in Ilesa till January 26, 2021.
