A suspected member of a syndicate that specialises in motorcycle theft, identified as Hassan Abdul, has been arrested in an attempt to steal a motorcycle at the GSM Village in Lokoja, the Kogi State, on Saturday.
City and Crime learnt that the 25-year-old suspect who hails from Anyigba in Dekina LGA of the state, had been on security agents’ wanted list for months.
The locals claimed the suspect was a notorious motorcycle snatcher who was behind a series of motorcycle thefts in Lokoja and its metropolis in recent times.
The commander of the Kogi State Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Chief Hassan Yusuf, said the suspect, Hassan Abdul, was nabbed after stealing a motorcycle at GSM Village in Cantonment, Lokoja on Friday.
Yusuf added that Abdul led a syndicate that used to operate between Anyigba and Lokoja metropolis, saying, he was arrested by vigilantes after a tip-off on Friday in Lokoja.
He said discreet investigation revealed that the suspect had stolen over 10 motorcycles in Lokoja, which he usually sold N150,000.
Meanwhile, the suspect has confessed to the crime, saying, “I have a master key which I use to open any type of motorcycle.
“I sold all the machines I stole at the sum of N150,000 each to an agent who resides behind Our Ladies School in Ayingba, Dekina Local Government in the state,” he said.
The suspect added that one of his partners in crime, Ogbe, was arrested recently over six stolen motorcycles within Lokoja, stressing that he is currently in Koton Karfe Correctional Centre.
The state police command’s spokesman, SP William Aya, did not respond to calls and text message before filing this report.
