Morocco 2022: CAF announces an increase of 150% in prize money

The prize money for the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which is currently taking place in Morocco, has been increased by 150 per cent in accordance with CAF’s new policy to make women’s football in Africa competitive on a worldwide scale.

The tournament kicked off Saturday after skipping the 2020 edition of the competition due to the outbreak of coronavirus with hosts Morocco playing Burkina Faso at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, in Rabat. 

The overall prize money of the competition has been increased from $975 000 to $2400 000 – an increase of almost $1.5 million.

The President of CAF and the CAF Executive Committee have identified women’s football as amongst the top priorities of CAF.

The winner of this year’s edition of the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2022 will pocket $500 000 – a 150% increase of $300 000.

The most successful side in the team, Super Falcons who won the last edition got $200,000 for their efforts in 2018.

The prize money for runners-up has almost doubled from $175 000 to $300 000 and the semi-finalists will get $225 000 each which has increased from $125 000.

It features some of the continent’s top players, including Nigeria (and FC Barcelona) star Asisat Oshoala, Cameroon’s Ajara Nchout Njoya (Inter Milan), South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana (Atletico Madrid) and many other global stars who ply their trade in major United States, European and African Leagues.
