The Director of the Korea Cultural Center in Nigeria (KCCN), Kim Changi-ki, said more Nigerian youths are falling in love with K-pop music.
He disclosed this while speaking on the sidelines of the K-pop show titled: “K-pop Hurray Concert Reloaded, The stars’ edition” in Abuja on Saturday.
The show, organised by KCCN, is a talent show created to give young talented Nigerians the opportunity to showcase their talents and promote Korean K-pop music.
K-pop, short for Korean popular music, is a form of popular music originating in South Korea as part of South Korean culture.
It includes styles and genres from around the world, such as pop, hip hop, R&B, rock, jazz, gospel, reggae, electronic dance, folk, country, disco, and classical on top of its traditional Korean music roots.
The term “K-pop” became popular in the 2000s, especially in the international context.
Changi-ki said a Nigerian team won the 2016 K-Pop competition in South Korea, adding that since then, the music type has been gaining more popularity amongst the Nigerian youths.
The K-pop concert have been held in Lagos annually in the past but the Centre has decided to bring it up North this year.
Changi-ki said as a result of the increasing popularity of the K-pop music, the KCCN had decided to hold concerts in Abuja in order to connect with more lovers of the music.
The first was held on the 4th of May, 2024 and the second took place about five weeks after and Ms Jennifer Ezeonyeasi, KCCN Cultural, Event and Communications Officer, said it was to give lovers of the music in the north the opportunity to express themselves.
She said: “This is like the other one we had earlier but this time around, we went with the winners of K-pop competition in Lagos in 2023 and 2024.
“This is like bringing the winners to Abuja to have a performance since we didn’t do the competition here in Abuja.
” We want to make sure that we have a close knit community of K-pop performers. We don’t want a situation that after the winners have been announced, it just ends there.
“This is an avenue to bring all K-pop performers, winners and intending k-pop performers together to network and do bigger things.”
