Mom, daughter, 1 other jailed three years for selling baby

The Benin Division of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria yesterday sentenced a woman, Mrs Ebere Okafor, her daughter, Peace Okafor, and one Ms Otungi Isioma to one-year imprisonment each for selling Peace Okafor’s baby.

Justice A. A. Adewemimo sentenced the three following their conviction after being arraigned by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

NAPTIP’s prosecuting officer, Tonia Mgbemeje, earlier told the court the three conspired and sold Peace Okafor’s baby for N250,000 to someone in Delta State.

The convicts pleaded guilty when the charge was read to them and begged the court for mercy, promising not to indulge in such act again.

Justice Adewemimo, however, sentenced the convicts to one year imprisonment each in addition to a fine of N200,000 each.
