A mob set a 38-year-old man ablaze after he dismembered a 40-year-old woman at Amaezike village in Mgbakwu, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Daily Trust gathered yesterday.

The woman, Ifeyinwa Obalum, a pap hawker, was said to be on her motorcycle carrying out her business when she was stopped by Madubueze Benjamin, also known as Eze-Amosu (‘Chief Wizard’) who inflicted machete cuts on her.

Our correspondent gathered that the woman catered for her 80-year-old blind husband and her son.

Residents said Benjamin had been acting strangely after returning from abroad a few years ago. A witness who identified himself as Nduka, said Benjamin had been moving around with a machete, always threatening to kill someone.

“The woman was not the first person he pursued early in the morning. He suddenly ran after her and chopped off her right hand and kept on pursuing her,” he said.

He said the woman later got tired of running and stopped, and Benjaminbeheaded her, adding that he was threatening to kill more people when he was overpowered by a mob which stoned him till he lost consciousness. They later tied him up and took him to his house and set the entire building ablaze, he added. Benjamin was already burnt to death before the arrival of vigilantes.

Anambra State police spokesman, Nkeiruka Nwode, confirmed the incident, saying the police went there around 8am following a distress call. “A mob killed the suspect and threw his body inside his house and set both ablaze,” she said, adding that the police retrieved the burnt body and deposited it with the body of the woman at the Isuaniocha morgue for autopsy.
