A young man suspected to be involved in cultism was, yesterday, stoned to death by a mob at the Modern Market area of Makurdi in Benue State.
However, the police said it was a suspected case of rival cult clash.
Our correspondent, however, gathered that the yet-to-be identified deceased was pursued by his assailants from somewhere else about mid-day yesterday until he was caught up with at the market junction.
It was learnt that the mob smashed the deceased’s head with stones and left him in the pool of his own blood where he eventually died.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations’ Officer (PPRO), DSP Moses Joel Yamu, confirmed the incident, adding that before operatives of the command could reach the place, the young man had already died.
Yamu said the police got a distress call which suggested that some cult boys were fighting but that, “the boy was killed before police got there and his assailants also fled.”
