Irate mob, on Friday night, allegedly hacked to death a notorious criminal said to be operating as a ‘one man squad’ in Gboko town of Benue State.
Daily Trust gathered that, in the past few months, the one-man gangster had terrorised residents of Gboko at nights and during the day, carting away traders’ monies and innocent people’s valuables at gunpoint.
It was learnt, however, that luck ran out on him about 7:00pm on Friday when he ran into a crowd, as he was being pursued by the police, who lynched him.
Governor Samuel Ortom had, earlier on Thursday, told newsmen in Makurdi shortly after the state security council meeting that they deliberated on ways of ending activities of a criminal named ‘One-man Squad’ operating in Gboko, as well as curbing the growing menace of cultists and armed robbers, who engage the services of commercial sex workers at Yamman Park and North Bank areas of Makurdi.
Spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Sewuese Catherine Anene, explained that the suspected criminal was robbing when he heard that the police were approaching and then took to his heel.
Anene said while the police chased the gangster, he abandoned his rifle and ran into a crowd where he was lynched before the police could rescue him.
The police spokesman added that the actual name of the criminal was still yet unknown at the time of filing this report.
