The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in the FCT has engaged in mass mobilisation of its members to deposit the old currency notes in banks ahead of the January 31, deadline when they will cease to be legal tender.
The group’s scribe in Gwagwalada Area Council, Muhammad Usman, who disclosed this to City & Crime in a phone interview on Monday, said most of the targeted members in the drive were those in the rural areas who were planning to perform this year’s Hajj.
He said, “We are mobilising them to come down to the town and see how we will arrange between them and other members that maintain bank accounts for the cash deposits.
“There are a number of them who have sold out their cows and are waiting for the announcement of deposit for the annual pilgrimage.”
The development was coming at a time when the majority of the ATMs in Abuja suburbs were still dispensing the old naira notes against the directive of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
