Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, Bello Goronyo, recently visited Adamawa State to inspect water projects.

During his visit, he was shocked to find that the Talum pump station installation project had not been executed despite the contractor allegedly giving the impression that it had been completed.

The project was contracted to America West African Agro Ltd for N128 million.

Goronyo expressed his disappointment at the contractor and summoned him to his office in Abuja for questioning.

The minister said the federal government was committed to ensuring that projects were executed according to specifications and that contractors who fail to deliver would be held accountable.

During his visit to Adamawa, Goronyo also toured the Kiri Dam, a 615-metric-cubic facility constructed in 1982 to provide irrigation water for the sugar refinery in Numan.

He met with Governor Ahmadu Fintiri and assured him of the federal government’s commitment to utilizing water resources for the benefit of the Nigerian people.

Fintiri, in response, pledged his support for the federal government’s efforts to achieve adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all, as well as make Nigeria open defecation free by 2030.

He emphasized that his administration will partner with the federal government to ensure that communities, schools, and health centers in the state are completely open defecation free.

The governor also expressed his commitment to cooperating with the federal government to boost food production through mechanized farming and attract investors to the state.

He commended the Managing Director of the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority for expanding the agency’s activities to support neighboring communities with land for dry season farming.

Fintiri further informed the minister that the government, with the support of development partners, plans to develop and leverage the potentials of the Kiri Dam in Shelleng Local Government Area.

He emphasized the importance of the dam to businesses and the tourism sector.
