Staff of the six area councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have suspended their two weeks strike action they embarked on the over nonpayment of their new minimum wage by the area council chairmen.

Daily Trust had reported that activities across the six area councils were grounded following the indefinite strike action by staff of the area councils over nonpayment of their 2019 new minimum wage and nonpayment of accrued arrears for 20 months by the council chairmen.

Addressing newsmen shortly after an emergency meeting of the State Executive Council of NULGE with the Senator representing the FCT, Philip Aduda, the two House of Representatives members, Hassan Usman Sokodabo, Micah Jiba, as well as the Six Area Council Chairmen, President of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employee (NULGE) in FCT, Comrade Abubakar Alhassan Yakub, said the union decided to suspend the strike action after extensive deliberations with the three members of the national assembly.

Intervention

He said the executive council members in session after carefully studying the intervention of the stakeholders and situation on ground, decided to suspend the strike.

According to him, the stakeholders agreed as a matter of urgency to source for funds for the implementation and sustainability of the new national minimum wage in January 2021.

Yakub, said the union has also agreed on modalities for the payment of the acrued arrears, which he said would be worked out in February, 2021.

“And based on conviction and assurances given to the union by the stakeholders, the union hereby suspend the ongoing industrial action as staff are directed to resume work on Thursday, November, 12th 2020.
He added “
